Banja

The Banja is the traditional Russian form of sauna and offers a very special experience that goes far beyond mere sweating. Here, not only the high temperatures and humid heat are in the foreground, but also the ritual aspects that make the Banja a firmly anchored part of Russian culture. A visit to the Banja combines body care with social interaction and holistic relaxation.

The temperatures in the Banja often range between 70 and 90 degrees, accompanied by high humidity created by regular infusions. Particularly characteristic is the intensive use of birch branches, the so-called 'Weniks'. These bundles of birch branches are soaked in water and gently beaten over the skin during the sauna session. This traditional massage stimulates blood circulation, opens the pores, and has a relaxing effect on the muscles.

A typical Banja visit consists of several sauna sessions. After sweating and infusions, a cold cooling traditionally follows – either by jumping into an ice-cold pool or a bath in a river or lake. This alternation between extreme heat and cold invigorates the circulation and strengthens the immune system. Additionally, it is common to take a break with tea or other drinks in between, which emphasizes the social aspect of the Banja experience.

The infusions in the Banja are often more intense than in other saunas, as a lot of water is poured onto the stove, creating dense, humid steam that quickly spreads in the sauna hut. This creates a deep, moist heat that warms the body particularly intensively and leads to heavy sweating. In combination with the birch branches, the skin is thoroughly cleansed, while the body is detoxified and the muscles are relaxed.

The Banja has a holistic effect on body and mind. It promotes detoxification, stimulates blood circulation, and strengthens the immune system. At the same time, it has a calming and balancing effect on the nervous system and helps to reduce stress. The alternation of heat, cold, and rest phases in the Banja is a powerful method to revitalize the body and recharge with new energy.

Those who visit the Banja not only enjoy the physical benefits but also immerse themselves in an ancient ritual that combines body care and social gathering. The unique combination of hot steam, birch branches, and ice-cold cooling makes the Banja an intense and invigorating sauna experience.
